Blogging boosts your social life: research

Well duh, really. Even when I was a kid in school, I found keeping a journal helped me to feel more balanced and in control of life than the times I didn't journal. It also gives you something you can look back through past entries to find things you'd forgot, dates that went with events, etc.

I keep a daily diary entry on my computer and add it to this blog once a week or so. Daily if I have the time to do that, but often I get other things crowding in and it gets set aside until I do have a moment.

Today I'm catching up on reading after having been ill last week. I'm much better this week, but still playing 'catch up' on my usual daily activities while trying to squeeze in a few extra things along the way.


So Sad

I just read that Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, as well as numerous other RPG games and systems passed away today.

As my college years were spent enjoying all the thought put into playing role playing games and then later my kids discovered they enjoyed these too, I just feel like our lives wouldn't have been the same had it not been for people like Gary.

My condolences to his family.

Another 11k+ step day. Today I finished the living room project (I had the windows open on Friday and didn't realise the wind was blowing dirt into the room). Took my walk late in the day after finishing vacuuming the entire lounge room from top to bottom, moving every bit of furniture, etc. Gee, I must be feeling better, even if it did take half the day and several rests.

I used the exercise bike for 5 minutes tonight after tea, which considering I had rice (which always sends my BGLs a bit high) seemed to be a success. I was planning to do some exercise with the Gym ball tonight too but the PDF file with exercises wouldn't print.

Notes: Appt with plastics at Flinders today (they are in 'charge' of the hole in my side). Someone scheduled me for the wrong clinic, but they saw me anyway. This was for a 3 or 4 month check up on my wound. Turns out someone put me in the wrong clinic day/time. I was in with skin cancer patients. But they saw me anyway and said it looks good, suggested packing it with a silver packing this week only because of the infection, and made comment about my lymphedema. I asked how much one affects the other (lymphedema, my wound). He said quite a bit, but they couldn't get me in any sooner to the lymphedema clinic. So that was my next stop as I knew I could just go in and ask if they had my referreral and see how far along I am on the waiting list. They are always really nice to me (it's also the BC clinic) and made me the earliest appt they could (May 16), and if there are any cancellations they'll call me.

There's a really good fruit/vet market that's between home and Flinders that was having a sale so I took my pull cart with me today and stopped there and picked up salad makings, got some meatballs at the butchers, and some Vietnamese cold rolls.

Got on bus to come home and it was packed. I miss-read the number and thought it was my bus that goes by my house and it wasn't. I should have switched at the interchange. So as usual when I get on the wrong bus, I took it all the way to Collonades and then got the right one and came home. Added a good 45 mins to my travel time today.

After breakfast and tea tonight I spent 5 minutes on the exercise bike. It seems to make a difference with my readings, so that's a good reward. Have been looking at any recen-tish diet changes and think I will go back to toast w/ peanut butter in the mornings as possibly the cheese and butter when I have the toasted cheese and vegemite half sandwich is way more fat than I need. Am also going to have less milk in my coffee and use coffee mate. Just looking for anything that would put 5 kilos on me in recent weeks. One day it wasn't there and the next it was, and I don't LIKE it. So will try to do better in the diet department and a bit more exercise. Next will be actually using the gym ball I sit on to do a few tummy related exercises.

Another busy but exhausting day. Went for walk early. When I came home, my new chair for my desk was here. Rod was very busy studying so I assembled it myself. (Am so pleased I can do things like that!) Had lunch, saw Rod off to school, then hopped on a bus to go to 'Old Reynella' as a new discount pharmacy is there and wanted to compare prices of vitamins and stuff with what I pay at an on-line pharmacy. Turns out for most things, they're cheaper, and I don't have to pay postage and wait for it to arrive. I was back on the next bus and home within under 45 mins. This was one of those little errands where having a license would have made things a lot faster, that's for sure.

Had to nap in afternoon. Didn't have much choice. My body said NAP! and so I had to follow instructions. Got some much needed work done in the late afternoon and this evening. I'm still way behind from being sick last week though.

My chair fits my desk nicely. My other chair was too high, and I can't use the gym ball all the time, my back just won't allow it. Nice thing is, the ball stows away under the desk, which is cool. So all in all, my $20 gym ball has been very expensive... $200 for a desk that's low enough for me to use while sitting on the ball (never mind it's exactly what I've been looking for over the past year), and now $40 for a student computer chair that also fits the desk. But at least my feet now actually reach the floor while I'm sitting at the desk. What an unusual experience for me!!

Notes: Quiet morning. Nurse came later than usual. She was able to get results from doctor. It's an infection caused by pseudomonas bacteria. I later picked up a prescription for a specific antibiotic while I was on my walk and have started it. Unfortunately it makes a me bit woozy, but if I need to chill out so it can do its job I don't mind. As long as it works.

Caught up on watching episodes of Neigbours (an Aussie soap) that I've been behind on watching.

Notes: I could kick myself. Was a nice cool but windy day and I opened the windows up. My lounge room (and other areas) are coated in a fine red dirt. ARG! As we don't use the living room I've closed it off until I can fully vac everything from top to bottom. What really ticks me off is last week I vac'ed and dusted in there.

I made the very wrong assumption that as we'd had a morning of rain that the dirt would have been 'tamped' by the rain. Well, not in Australia.

Rod and I worked on the patio today. I got the cobwebs out of the way (these grow like snow accumulates in Michigan, I swear), and gave the furniture a good dusting off and he used the blower/vac to get the dirt and leaves out of the way. Looks great.

Notes: Ricky is 1 month old. Spent morning vacuuming after dirt got blown in yesterday. Have done the office, dining room, kitchen, hallway, entrance. Just as I reached the living room, the RDNS nurse came, so I put vac and cord in the room and closed the doors off to it. My plan was to get back to it after todays walk, but that didn't happen. The nurse came, we had lunch, and then I was just going to have a quick nap before my walk and I slept through the entire afternoon. Those new antibiotics really do quite a good job of getting me to rest while it does it's work. Bit annoying as my plans for the day are shot, but I was quite worn out at the time I lied down so I guess I must have needed it.

The results are in ...

I've only got a minimum of time to write this before the new antibiotics kick in and make me drowsy.

The swab test showed that my infection is from a pseudomonas (pronounced "sudamonas") bacteria. From what I've gathered reading on-line sources, I wouldn't be surprised if it's also the source of my bronchitis. It loves wet environments and both my wound and respiratory system would be places it'd be quite happy to thrive in. I picked up a new prescription of antibiotics to deal with it (Ciprofloxacin or 'Cipro'), and look forward to feeling much better soon.

One of its side effects is kicking my butt (drowsiness), so it means I actually have to leave the computer and go veg while it does it's job. I take my next dose in about half an hour and going from my first dose this afternoon, I have about an hour before it tells me to take a hike and get out of its way. As long as it gets me better, I don't care.

Not much else to type about at the moment, but I know this update was an important one to do.

Today I was able to rearrange when the nurse came so I could still take the class studying for my Learners permit. The class was great. Kirstie and I nearly didn't get in as she was mis-informed on the phone and we were supposed to book in beforehand, but luckily the teacher accepted both of us and so we're in. Phew.

Jayne (my nurse) rang my doctors office to get the swab results but the lab is doing a test for staph and it wasn't done yet. The results will be in tomorrow morning. She was shocked at the amount of exudate - my dressing was totally saturated and it was only the fact I had a patchwork of opsite (a type of tape) that kept it from leaking out. Actually it was dribbling a bit but we couldn't find the source so I ended up going to the class this morning wearing a shirt I wasn't particularly fussed about getting wet in back if it leaked much. It got wet, but not too bad.

So the first thing the nurse did was change me from 3x a week to daily, including weekends so the exudate, which is burning my skin, won't sit on my skin too long. So I've gone from visits twice a week to 3x a week and now daily. She noted the red scar line, and how my back has had even more fluid filling it since Monday.

Today it's affected my breathing. I know I have bronchitis and so breathing deep isn't easy, but that's clearing up somewhat. However, I can't take a deep breath because the extra fluid build up is doing a real 'boa constrictor' thing on me. The tightness and reduced ability to move normally has affected my breathing, my shoulder and shoulder blade, my side, my back (mostly), my right hip and buttocks. And tonight I swear the top of my thigh is also starting to build up fluid. The other really annoying thing is that my stomach seems to be sticking out as far as when I was pregnant for Christopher, and it's rock hard. It's mostly the right side, but with my stomach, the left side just follows along with what the right is doing as if it didn't have a choice. Ever see the blue Meanies from the movie 'Yellow Submarine'? That's how I feel like I look.

I did go on my walk today. It wasn't a quick walk, but I got there and back ok. My back and hip aches no matter whether I'm walking, sitting or lying down. It's frustrating. I had nearly weaned myself off the pain medication too. Needless to say, I take them when I need them.

I'll know more tomorrow about the results of the swab and more than likely the antibiotics I'm on will be changed.

It's 9:47pm, but it feels like 2am to me. I don't think I'll be 'up' much longer tonight.

Sigh....

Rod was checking my bandage for me (looking for leaks so he could tape me up so I wouldn't get the dressing wet when I had a shower), and now I have red streaks on my scar lines. Cellulitis.

I have my first Learners permit class tomorrow morning, and the nurse is to come in the morning as well. I'd forgotten about the class when we decided to go to 3x a week visits. I'll have to ring her as early to her starting time as possible so she'll know to come in the afternoon. Meanwhile, I'm even stiffer than I was yesterday. I'm really not liking the way this is going. It's so deja vu.

Had Rod drop me off at shopping centre on his way to the dentist. Did lots of window shopping, put in prescriptions, got hair cut, and met up with Rod at grocery store an hour and a half later. Had KFC for tea.

Extremely high reading this morning. Rod suggested maybe I had something to eat in my sleep overnight. Was really scary.

Rod had school this morning and was late because we had a flat tyre on the car, then he tried to get the bike going and it wouldn't start so he had to change the tyre.

Didn't take walk as was feeling off and didn't want to find myself stuck without a way home. Went to bed after 2nd reading this morning. Got up around 11 or so, reading better, but still high. Had lunch, readings better but definitely not normal. Was running a fever. Normal is 36.4c for me, and temps were in the 37.4 range. Day before was in the 38.1 range. Felt off all day. A bit more active in the afternoon. Videotaped a blue-tongued skink on the patio. Chatted with Chris and Terry online.

Hospital called about elective surgery. I'm at top of list again. She mentioned I had an appt in a couple of weeks with PTR team (they're the ones who were/are supervising my wound). This was news to me, so she gave me the date and time. 26 Feb 2pm.

Had chat with client today about his website. Unfortunately haven't got back to working on it at all today. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day.

PHEW. Busy day. Rods first full day back at TAFE so I had house to myself all day. I installed a set of speakers on his computer, and the back and seat massager on his chair, since it arrived in the mail today. I wouldn't touch his desk without cleaning it first, so that got done as well. Since it's only a day before Valentines, I put his card on his chair. The speakers were so he wouldn't have to go crawling under his desk to plug them in... he does a lot of this stuff for me, I thought it'd be a nice surprise to turn the tables. Then I did all the cleaning jobs I hate doing with other people around. Felt good, and he came home just before I finished and helped with the last bit (not knowing about his new massager... I had forbidden him from going in the office, telling him the floor needed to dry. As I'd tested the massager and found it hard to leave it (OMG, it felt SO good), I figured I'd make sure he'd done all the things he needed to and that he had his coffee and then he could sit and enjoy his massage while reading mail. The plan worked, but funnily enough he didn't notice the massager on his chair - it's black and blends in and fits it perfectly. The first thing he noticed was his desk was clean!

As I sit behind him, and he's using the massager, I can feel the vibrations in MY chair, so it's like a 2 for 1. We only paid $20 for it and it has 5 types of massage and you can set different areas where it works - plus has lumbar heat. It's a lot like those fancy recliner chairs that have built in massage, but this is a pad that goes over a chair. Much cheaper, and in this case, VERY well worth it.

My first two readings were high today. And I had the same breakfast as usual, plus I'd walked to the shops and back for my scratchy. But after that it improved as I really did stay quite busy from about 11:30am till at least 4:30. Tonight if I can stay awake, I'll be woking on client work. I was running a fever this morning, which is likely the cause of the high readings. Sure wish that would just quit it.

Worked most of day on a website for a client. Started new antibiotic. Nurse said my wound was very wet with exudite and greenish, so looks like I got prescription for antibiotics in the nick of time. I got them for my bronchitis though. Other than that, feeling quite well. Nasty boughts of random asthma here and there though.

Rod finished getting my desk together and we discovered it has a hidden slide for the mouse 'pad' - it slides out from the right or left side of the slide out keyboard table. This desk has two bookshelves across the centre, 3 drawers on the side, and 4 cubby hole type shelves. It also has a slide out additional desk area on the left hand side. It's a 'kids' model, but sturdy, not too kiddy looking, and the key things are that it's height is right for me (ie I'm short and for once the table where I type isn't too high), and it has all the bits I've wanted in a desk. I only went into Target to look for an insulated drink bottle since I'd lost mine at Glenelg on the weekend. Instead, I saw this desk and fell in love with it. Little did we know it was going to take Rod all evening plus some today to get it together. Lots of bits and pieces. Like about 3 kilos worth of screws alone.

So instead of playing with my new desk and getting used to it, because of the mess made in installing it, I spent the day vacuuming, wiping surfaces and other wise doing housework when I really wanted to come bang on the keys!!

The cubby holes and shelves are still mostly empty but no worries, they'll get filled up.

Out to lunch with the Lunch Group. Went to Bunnings to have daily walk.

As Kirstie, a daughter of my friend,s is enrolling in a course at Hackham community centre that's 5 weeks long to do the first things required to get a drivers learning permit, I asked if she'd mind if I attended too and she was fine with it. The course starts on the 20th Feb and means I'll be in class every Wednesday for 5 weeks. Total cost, including the required road rules theory test, is $50.

After that I'll have my learners permit and Rod can be my qualified supervising driver. It'll still be a couple of years or more before I get a full drivers license, but it's a good start. So today I bought 'The Drivers Handbook' which is also a required item for the course and it has all the items that are on the theory test covered. I'll be studying it and taking the online test at the RAA website on a regular basis to get familiar with the test questions and answers. It'll be interesting to see how I improve on the test over time. And the best thing about this is that I won't be doing it ALONE. Kirstie is 2yrs younger than my daughter and we get along quite well.

So I saw the doctor yesterday afternoon and he did a swab, commenting that the exudate is green (a sign of infection). I'm back on antibiotics. I wasn't well enough to get across to him that if we did something about the high BGLs it might be better for the overall situation. I don't think he knows I can handle insulin on my own. A year ago in the hospital they had me on a sliding scale with insulin. As in, if my BGL was at certain levels that would decide how much insulin I'd receive. It's not like being on insulin permanently, it's just during the crisis. Anyway, I didn't even get the sliding scale insulin part of my question.

Afterwards, I came home and vegged for the rest of the day/night. It's HOT. Yesterday it got up to 35.9c/96.62f and today it's expected to reach 36c or higher. One good thing about today is a cool change is supposed to come through in the late afternoon. Anyway, running a fever when it's hot is just evil.

I'm surprised I'm at the computer at the moment. I don't know how long I'll manage to stay upright, but when I've reached my limit, I'll definitely retreat to the coolness of my bedroom.

Quick Update

The RDNS nurse decided I should be seen 3x a week again. There's no doubting the amount of fluid in my back, but she also found that the wound is exudating at a +++ level, and my skin is burned where it was on my skin over the weekend. I guess that's the burning sensation.

I have a 2pm doctors appointment, and she wrote out a note for him and asked if a swab would be beneficial. She was able to push on the fluid filled areas on my back and in some cases get a bit of fluid out from the wound. I'm really looking forward to it closing up, but not at the expense of having fluid stagnating in my back. (sigh).

Am running a fever this morning, and the expected outside temp is supposed to be 35c (about 95f).

I really don't know what to think

For the last week or so I've had a low grade fever and high glucose readings. Last Tuesday was the highest with two readings in the 20's. At the same time, very gradually the fluid in my back has increased to the point where this morning it feels as though the skin is going to burst. It hurts, itches and burns all at the same time. I will be making an appt to see the GP this morning (it's just after 7am at the moment - can't sleep), and the RDNS nurse is also scheduled for today. Being this is February and it was the end of last Feb that I had very similar symptoms - high glucose readings with low fever and slowly expanding fluid in my back, I really am trying not to think the very worst, but at the same time I have all sorts of contingency plans running through my head. I'd like to put it out of my mind, but because the pressure in my back is so intense, it's a bit hard to concentrate on anything else.

I just viewed some new pics and videos of my grandson - that really helped for a few minutes, but alas, I came to the end of the new files all too soon. And viewed them again twice. :-)

Anyway, just thought I'd get some of my thoughts on paper so they aren't rattling around in my head all day.

The hole in my side is getting much smaller. I'm a little worried about my back having extra fluid in it but apparently it usually will resolve itself, which is good. Hope so!

I've had some rather amazingly high glucose readings lately. Not sure what to make of it, really. And I'm falling asleep as I type and half the words I'm typing are misspelled, so must be time to stop.

This has also been an experiment with a browser plug in that helps me to to post to the blog. We'll see!

Busy few days

I've been quite busy and active the last few days. Tuesday it was a lovely cool day so while out on my walk I stopped into several stores looking for a replacement for an insulated water bottle that I lost when we were at Glenelg on Sunday. Being that the new school year started on Monday, and there were lots of folks with kids there having their last summer fling, I really hope my cool water bottle went to a kid that needed one. Anyway, I didn't find a replacement water bottle, but when I went into Target I ended up walking right up to a computer desk they had put on display...

Last year, we bought a desk for me, but we both knew it wasn't quite what I wanted, but that it would do the job for the time being. Well, this was 'it'. The nearest one similar to this that we'd seen last year was out of our price range. It had a slide out keyboard, a neat pull out table on the left side, plenty of space for the monitor and other stuff, plus two book shelves above, and on the side, 3 drawers and 4 cubby holes for books or other stuff. And the price was at least half of what the one I looked at a year ago at Ikea cost.

Normally when I see this kind of thing, I tend to forget about it once I get home, but because the new gym ball I bought to sit on when at the computer made my desk a bit high for me, especially for typing, I didn't forget. And we needed extra bookcase space too. So I talked to Rod about it, and we planned to have a look at it together the next day. Meanwhile, since Rod's desk has a keyboard drawer, I tested typing on his keyboard while sitting on my ball. No worries! So then I measured the height from the floor to the top of the drawer so I could check on the desk at the store.

So on Wednesday, I had an appointment with a counsellor at 2, so we left home at 1pm and stopped in at Target. Turns out the desk was on sale, at $100 off it's normal price. And there was only one left. It weighed a ton -- well, 65 kilos. That's 143 pounds. Rod says that the screws alone were about 2 or 3 kilos. We were able to pay for it and then we would come back later in the day to pick it up out the back. We got to Colonnades (a shopping mall that also has other agencies and what not with it) for my appointment with about 15 minutes to spare, so I zapped around picking up a couple of things I had on my list to get beforehand. One of those things was a Bookcrossing book that had been dropped off at Billy Baxter's (a coffee shop) earlier in the week by another Bookcrosser. I had read the book a few times when I was a teen and wanted it so I could return it to my collection. (It's one I had to leave behind in Michigan when I moved to Australia). Luckily the book was still there, waiting for me. Yay! The book is 'Mister God, This is Anna' by Fynn. Excellent read, and I can't wait to re-read it from an adults perspective. And this time with a Pommy near by to explain those things mentioned that were too UK-specific for me to grasp back then (yeah and that was in the days before Google and the Internet too).

Later, I walked the length of the mall for my daily walk, and then met Rod and we did grocery shopping. We got home, and boy was I surprised to see the flat pack for the desk already in the office! Turns out, he'd gone to get it while I was in my appointment. Neat. So we unpacked groceries, had tea and then Rod started on the assembly. You know that phrase 'Some Assembly Required' ?? This one should have been 'Degree in reading assembly instructions required. Time to build: 20 hours'. LOL. He started it around 8pm and by 1am, had it in a mostly usable state, but didn't have the keyboard tray or drawers assembled. We called it a night and he put the rest of it together Thursday morning.

Unfortunately, I didn't get much of a chance to use the desk until today as during the assembly process there was a lot of styrofoam, which broke into small pieces and was in every crack and crevice of the room. It looked like a light dusting of snow had hit it. Naturally too, I had to clean the old desk (we're hoping one of our neighbours will want it), and clean the new one too. And since I had to have the vac out for the office, I ended up doing the rest of the house too.

Today I moved some of my favourite reference books onto the desk bookshelves, and let me tell you, it is SO NICE to have my reference books back in easy reach again. Then I tackled one of our bookcases that just seemed to need a good sorting out. Most of the cleaning was dealing with old software bits of papers and warranties long expired, etc. Got rid of a lot of unnecessary stuff.

This afternoon I printed some pics of little Ricky, my one and only brand new grandson so I could show him off at the Breastroke meeting this afternoon. In doing so, I also printed a lovely 5x7 of one of my favourite pics. Now I just need to find another 5x7 frame for it.

The Breastroke meeting was lovely and it was great catching up with everyone again. I took a few pics I could add to the website I'm working on for the group. I left early (I still can't go in the pool or spa until the hole in my side is completely healed), and Rod and I headed into the city.

We did the usual trip to the Central Market, starting with a cheap meal in the food court. We split a $5.00 heaped plate of various Chinese food and Rod had a beer while I had a diet coke which I added a shot of Rum to. One of the things I've learned is that spirits tend to lower my blood glucose levels and doing this once in awhile, like when green tea isn't available, seems to work quite well. That and having a drink before shopping really makes it much more fun. Our next stop was to the touristy shops so I could buy my new grandson an Aussie t-shirt. I found one his parents are going to laugh their heads off over, but I think he'll have to grow into it a bit. Still better too big than too small.

Next stop was the Asian grocery. This is a huge store that also services many of the Asian restaurants so not only do they have some of the neatest stuff but they also have large quantity items. On the list were raw prawns, as they have the very best prices anywhere and garlic. Last year, we bought a 5k restaurant size bucket of garlic and even though my family in the USA tell me that store bought minced garlic isn't strong enough for them, I think it must be a USA / Australian thing. Either that or the restaurant grade we get is just better. Anyway, it took a year to use, but it's near the end so it was time for a new one. I also sometimes use garlic granules and these are expensive at the regular shops. I bought a large bag of it that will last a LONG while for the same price I paid when I bought a 100g bottle of it at the regular grocery store. They also have plates, bowls, etc. in the same pattern as my favourite tea cup (see the photo on the side bar). Rod isn't particularly keen on the pattern but I quite like it, and have been buying bits of the set on each trip to the market. This time I bought two noodle bowls. One of our other finds there this time was frozen clam meat... at only $6.50 for a 500g bag. Guess what we're having for tea on Monday? :-) Neither one of us has had clam in AGES and AGES. Yum. Once we finished at the Asian grocery, we wandered up and down the aisles of the market (it's the largest market of it's type in the whole southern hemisphere). We found some off-cut Aussie Swiss cheese for a good price, and I picked up a few veggies. Off cuts in this instance are small bits of cheese that's left over from a big wheel of cheese after they've cut nice looking pieces to sell. Personally I don't care how weird a piece of cheese looks as long as it tastes good, and it helps that the price on these is a lot lower than than 'nicer' looking cuts.

We're now home, unpacked, and I'm typing to you. Exciting, hey?

We did have one weird experience though. Parking at the market is never an easy task and we managed to find a spot where someone in a big SUV was painfully trying to extract themselves. It was at a bit of a T junction and we would be able to practically drive straight into the spot. We had to wait about a minute, but no big deal. While we were waiting, on the 'road' to the left of us another SUV pulled up and turned their blinkers on - for the same spot. Well we were nearer to it and had been waiting for it as well as indicating our intentions, so we took the park. WELL... I was on my mobile with a client who'd just rung me, but all of a sudden there was a woman on Rod's side of the car with her hands on the window yelling at him for taking the car park! She said she'd been waiting for 10 minutes for it. Right... we saw her pull up after we were already sitting waiting for the spot to be vacated. Rod started rolling up the window and she actually HIT her hand against it! Meanwhile my poor client is going 'Hey Gaelyne... you there??'... being somewhat flabbergasted I told him someone had just hit our car (he probably thought it was a car accident) and I told him I'd ring him back once we got home. Rod got out of the car and the woman was still standing there giving him holy heck for driving straight into a spot that she would have had to spend at least 5 minutes manoeuvring to get into in the first place, and then probably another 10 to get out of later. I think what shocked me most is that 'road rage' tends to be presented on TV as something MEN have. Obviously they never met this woman. I was actually a bit worried about walking away from the car for awhile as I kind of worried she'd come back and slash the tires or something. Anyway, I just thought the whole thing was rather weird.

Tomorrow we have our monthly lunch with the Lunch Group (a bunch of us geeks and family go to various pubs for cheap counter meals and catch up with each other).

Obviously by my activity levels, I'm feeling much better. I haven't had a random fever in about a week, and because of the walking I've been doing as well as using the gym ball as my computer chair, I'm finding that I'm a whole lot more flexible than I had been for quite awhile. For example, I took some photos of the girls in the pool at Breastroke tonight and while talking with June, I squatted so we could each hear the other better. She said wow, that's something I can't do, and I answered with 'Wow, I didn't know I COULD do this!'. I'm sure a few weeks ago I couldn't have.

The hole in my side is still there, but shrinking a LOT. It should only be another few weeks and I'll be all done with nurses changing the dressing and be able to get in the pool and spa on Fridays with the other girls. I told them tonight that when I can go into the pool, I'm bringing a bottle of bubbly to celebrate with them!

Well, time for me to finish this and probably head to bed. Last night I called it a night early and could barely wake up to watch a bit of TV with Rod. I'd been going along all day being quite energetic and doing heaps of stuff and then suddenly around 11pm that was it - I was practically asleep before I even reached the bedroom. I am so pleased to finally have some energy though. It's been a long time coming. Catchya later.

My 'Gourmet' Pizza

My homemade gourmet pizza - Instant Fave

Every other Sunday, I make two home made pizza's. One for the night, and the other to freeze for the following Sunday.

While we were in Glenelg yesterday, we noted many pizzerias offering gourmet pizza with similar ingredients to mine. The closest one in regards to items and types of cheeses and type of crust only cost $32 AUD for one about the same size as mine. Wow!

Most of my ingredients are either bought at wholesale restaurant prices (such as prawns from the Asian groceries at Adelaide Central Market), or were purchased marked down and either frozen or stored until used. For example awhile back I bought chilli peppers stuffed with feta cheese. These were stored in sealed airtight containers in olive oil. They were only a $1 a package, and have made for an interesting pizza topping after slicing. I buy green and red capsicums (peppers) in bulk and then dice them up and freeze them. This is just to say that even though my pizza's are definitely extravagant, they aren't 'expensive' to prepare.


Flitterby's Pizza
-----------------------

Crust - put the ingredients in your Automatic Bread Machine in the order recommended for your particular machine.

290 ml (1 and 1/4c) water
3 T Olive Oil
500 g 3 and 3/4c) Unbleached Plain Flour
1t Sugar or Splenda
1/2 t Salt
Handful dried onion flakes
Herbs to taste - I use about a T each of oregano, basil, mixed Italian seasonings and chilli flakes.

Put in ABM on dough setting. I sometimes add about 1/4c parmesan cheese to the dough when it beeps for the fruit and nut additions.

When the dough is finished, preheat oven to 220c or 430f. Spray 2 pizza pans with oil and then divide the dough onto the pans. Flatten dough so it fits the pans nicely (I've never been able to roll out dough and this method works fine for me). Use the tines of a fork to put small holes throughout the crust (even the edges) as this helps it to cook evenly.

Topping:

I don't use pizza sauce. Instead I use a garlic and olive oil spread.

Spread about 1/2 or 1 T olive oil onto crust.

Add about 2T finely diced garlic to the oil and spread evenly covering entire pizza.

Next add a layer of pizza cheese (a mix of mozzarella, parmesan and cheddar cheese).

Now add any toppings you prefer. The above pizza has prawns, pepperoni, mushrooms, black olives, onions, red capsicum (red pepper), and green chilli peppers stuffed with feta cheese and then sliced. Other ingredients we enjoy are anchovies, pork sausage and chorizo.

Once the toppings have gone on, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over each of the prawns. Follow with another layer of pizza cheese and then finish with either parmesan cheese or grated reggiano.

Allow to sit for about 5-10 minutes to let the dough rest, then put in a hot oven (about 220c or 430f) for approximately 25minutes or until cheese is bubbly all over.

For freezing, cut cooled pizza into slices, then put on a large plate and seal with plastic wrap. To cook this pizza, first thaw it all the way, then put in microwave for about 4-5 minutes (depending on your microwave) until the cheese is bubbly. We've found that using this method, the crust is actually softer than if we reheat it in the oven.

This is NOT a diabetic recipe and isn't low carb, or low calorie. It is good though. :-)

A new love in my life

Goodness, I've fallen in love. I've only seen a few photos of my grandson, but he is the cutest most adorable baby with the roundest big head. He's utterly perfect. You do realise I could wax on this way for pages and pages...

I also marvel at the excitement that his birth has caused. So many people just delighted to have a new baby in our family, it's amazing, and wonderful.

I've had two naps today... at first I thought it was the excitement that's just worn me out, but I have been really flat for the last couple of days. Just not a lot of energy and an awful lot of just 'can't be bothered' type stuff (aside from baby Grandson, that is). I took my temp today just before the second nap, and golly, it was 38. So maybe it wasn't just excitement making me tired after all. I really hoped I was on the mend, too.

Nope, still no baby... but something that helps the wait a little

I have great kids. They made me a video from the hospital. It really helps me feel more connected. And, I heard that Terry brought a special item with him that was from my MOM. When I heard that, I got all teary-eyed again, but in a good way. And I'm amazed how in the video Terry looks so much like my relatives on Mom's side. Amazing.

Granny 2B - Emotions are running high

Just wanted to let you know that the baby is definitely on his way today.
J's water has broke, and she is having regular contractions. She and
T are at the hospital, and the nurses say the baby probably won't be
delivered until later tonight or early morning tomorrow (your time).

I'm going to be a Granny! And there's a whole new person to join our family.

Grandma and 3 very happy kids 1989 What I didn't mention is how emotional I feel at the moment. Yes, it's hard being all the way in Australia when my family is in Michigan, but I've been surprised at how much I am missing my mother, who passed away in June 1994.

When my oldest was born, she wasn't with me, but she was there within half an hour of his birth. Some people had told her not to be helping me - but she ignored that advice and even took it upon herself to drive to the hospital even though it was fairly late at night (after 9pm) and I was over an hour away. She also came and took me home from the hospital, to my little apartment, and we stopped on the way to pick up supplies. She couldn't stay with me because she had to work, but she wanted to, and would have if she could. When I had my next two babies, she came and stayed a few days each time - and with my second one, she even stayed a week before he finally came, and helped me try all kinds of things to get labour started again. Most importantly, she was there.

T was the first grandson, and he was special to my Mom. She tried not to have favourites, and she did really well with that, but she had a soft spot for him. She even quit smoking not long after he was born because she wanted to see him grow up. I sure wish she had. T's birthday was only a few months after my Mom died, and I found that day to be especially hard. I cried, a LOT. I was so sad he wouldn't be receiving any cards or phone calls or visits from her. I cried because it hurt that she cared so much for him, and she'd never get to see important milestones in his life. And he wouldn't be able to share secrets with her and be a part of each others lives.

Today I cry because she would have given anything to be part of this wonderful day that her new great-grandson comes into this world and becomes a part of our family. I miss her SO intensely at the moment, it's hard to describe. I know she's here in my heart, and I know she's able to be with me, and with T & J at the same time (which couldn't happen in the flesh), but it's not the same as being able to laugh and smile together, and hug with joy on this momentous occasion. I'm sure she'd have another soft spot for my grandson too.

I'm sure I'll have other posts today, but decided I needed to share this while the emotions are right here on the edge, so to speak.

Notes: Woke up 'ok', but got very sleep around 10:30am so went back to bed for a nap. Got up and had lunch about 1pm. Went back to bed again till about 4pm. Highest temp: 37.8c. Decided not to do walk today as obviously not really well. Wish I'd get over this. Have spent late afternoon reading Email and taking it easy.

Notes: Took down Christmas decorations today, vacuumed and swept patio. I decided as I had over 3000 steps by time I finished at 11:30 that this constituted my 'walk' for the day, so I owe myself a scratchy. An otherwise quiet day. It's been over 48hrs since my gym ball was filled so I can finally use it now. Used it for about half hour tonight at my desk. I'm trying to ease into it slowly until my body/muscles get used to it. Can really feel that I'm using different muscles when sitting on it. Regarding the high after tea reading, it's probably a combination of the 3 minute noodles plus it was a different brand of Satay sauce that I used. So won't buy that brand again.

Notes: Computer club meeting. Rod had to go into TAFE (school) to get next semester's courses sorted out, so I tagged along and had him drop me at the mall. Did some retail therapy - mostly window shopping. We met at Woolies and did our weekly shopping. One nice thing - turns out Rod doesn't go back to school until Mid-February. He thought the semester started next week.

Notes: Glorious day weather-wise. Did a lot of pottering around the house doing various odd jobs. Took my walk, vacuumed, etc. Rod bought my other 1gig memory today and was shocked it was only $35. So now I have 2gig memory in my computer.

Fri 18 January

Tea: fish & chips, watched movie (snacked).

Notes: Woke up with sinus' a bit better, but with a very sore ear (internally). The outside of the ear was very very red, hot and swollen. It's still red and swollen (not as bad though) but no longer hot. Have had ear ache all day. Would have tried to see GP but it's a Friday. Will get in to GP if still have problem on Monday. It's the left ear and also the left sinus' that are worse than the right so I think there's a definite connection. I also have a bone fragment in my gum that's trying to eventually work its way out. I'm sure it's not helping things either.

Took a nap from about 10:30am to 12pm or so. Didn't go for walk as just feeling really funky. That and it was a bit warm out today. Watched 'Looney Tunes' movie (the one w/ Brendan Frasier in it) while having tea tonight and then snacked a bit while watching. Didn't really help my BGL.

Quiet day all in all.

Notes: Picked up Comb 12 Tissue Salts today. These are all 12 of the tissue salts in one chewable tablet. My reasoning for this is the two types I've tried - one for muscle spasms and another for sinus problems have worked very well for me. As some of the other salts help with slow healing wounds, anemia, asthma, etc., wouldn't it be great if I corrected the balance of tissue salts in my body and it helped take care of these things? My ear is much much better today, thanks in part to the sinus/glandular tissue salts I started taking on Wednesday. I read up and it did say symptoms may get worse for a day before subsiding (sometimes things just have to come to a 'head'). Anyway, it's worth a try. I've nothing to lose and improving things on a cellular basis might truly be the best thing I've tried yet. And if it doesn't help, it at least does no harm as what minerals the body doesn't use are eliminated.

Kubuntu v7.10 ('Gutsy Gibbon') KDE 3.5 Desktop

1 Above are menus and links to applications that I use most often.

2 I was burning a CD when I took the screenshot.

3 The time in Michigan (where my kids are). Next to this is the trashcan and the two icons are to lock the screen (which I never use) and the logout button.

4 Date, Time and current weather conditions. 'Camera' is the name of my machine.

5 Our doorcam. I can click on the picture and get a larger view that updates automatically as the webcam software updates the picture. Handy for seeing who's coming to the door. At the time of this screen capture, it was night time and only part of our car shows at the top of the pic.

6 One of our Webcams. I only added this one to see how the program worked, but it's kinda cool to have eyes in the back of my head and see what Rod's up to behind me. Like the doorcam, I can click on the picture and get a larger view that updates automatically.

7 I was going to reserve this space for pictures of my grandson (due to be born sometime this week), but I was sent some ultra sounds scans so have used this instead. Same as above, I can click on the picture for a larger image. Bet I'll be doing that a lot once the baby is born and I get some nice pics of him. :-)

10 Temps for both my CPUs.

11 Memory and Swap status.

12 Volume slider for adjusting the sound sound volume. Under this is a display of the program using the most CPU at the time of the capture. It was Xorg at 26%. I've found that with the dual core CPUs these just pop up and disappear.

13 ADSL monitor. I've used 13.8 of 20 gig available for the month. Below this shows the usage chart for the last month. Internode is the name of my ISP.

14 My current 'Up-time'. My computer had been up for a total of 4 days 23 hours and 40 minutes at the time of the screen capture.

15 Tail of my webcam log that shows me details of the last computer that visited my webcam. In this example it was my son. I know this because of being in chat with him at the time. This updates as often as there are accesses to the cams. Sometimes this is quite often, other times, it can be rather static.

16 The button at the far left acts the same as the desktop button on Windows. It minimises all windows in the current desktop. Next is a type in/drop down form which lets me run programs right from the panel. The little image and text 'Webcam' shows the names of any programs running in the current desktop. 'Webcam' correlates to #15. I haven't figured out how to make it not show as a taskbar entry.

17 My 10 desktops. I like to keep things organised so my mail software runs in the 'Mail' desktop, my web browser is in the 'Web' desktop. These don't need to be named, but I've been using the same convention in the same order for about 10yrs now so I'm rather used to it. The grey boxes are the ones where I have software open in those desktops.

18 The system tray. The blue icon is Kopete, the chat program I use. It lets me talk with family whether they use ICQ, MSN, AOL, etc. The basket is for a note organiser program named 'Baskets'. It lets me keep notes on my day, have to-do lists, recipe baskets, etc. Very useful program, and not boring or bland like a lot of notes programs - you have complete control over colours, fonts, etc., and can even add pics or weblinks. Next is the icon for Amarok, which is a music player that I like to use. The zeros are for three mail boxes that I like to be notified when new mail has arrived. At the time of the screenshot I had no mail in any of the boxes. When there is mail, the number changes and a pop up box shows me the name of the sender and the subject. I love this as it saves me from running to check my inbox only to find out it's spam.

19 The background image on this screen capture is "Azure Wallpaper" by RaNdOm-HeRo58 on DeviantArt. I have my background set to change every 15 minutes and have a variety of background images that are randomly displayed.

Logging BGL Meter data the 'Old Fashioned Way'

For ages, I've used a cable to download data from my meter to the computer and then into a database so I can work with it on my website. The software I use for this is from the company that makes the meter, and has always been a big on the frustrating side. If I suspend my Windows computer (I normally use Linux), the software won't read the meter again until I reboot. If I hold my tongue the wrong way it might recognise the meter, but not download the data. So a week or so ago I Emailed the company representative that I bought the meter from, and asked if there'd been any software updates. To my surprise, they will be releasing an update within the next few weeks, and he gave me a private link so I could download it in advance. The upgrade is much better -- it finds my meter immediately. It also lists all my records. But it refuses to SAVE the records. UGH! Worse, when I tried to go back to the older software, the not saving data problem remained. I Emailed Mark on Friday about it and of course being close to the end of the day he couldn't do anything more than let me know he'd check a few things and get back to me on Monday. Today he sent Email to let me know he'd be mailing a CD with the new software and once it arrives to uninstall the old, then install the new and let him know how it goes. Hope it works.

So I've got over 35 numbers accumulated in my meter (it holds 400 so I'm not in any fear of losing data), and while I've been manually updating my Sugarstats.com data, I am waiting until I have the software so I can update my own database and website. Hope it comes soon.

I'm still having random fevers and needing to take naps. Yesterday was one of those days, unfortunately. Today was much better. I took down the Christmas tree today and all the trimmings, vacuumed, swept the patio and felt good for most of the day. I took a nap around 4 to 5:30 this afternoon, but didn't get far with it - a combined asthma and basic phlegm/allergy attack had me going through tissues and wishing it'd all just settle down.

I bought a gym ball to use as my office chair at the local sports shop. They inflated it for me, and let me know I had to wait at least 48hrs for the rubber to expand before using it. The time was up today so I spent half an hour this evening using it at the desk. I quite liked it, but can definitely feel different muscles being used. I plan to ease into using it slowly so figure starting out using it half an hour in the morning and evening for a few days and then build up to an hour and eventually using it full time. It's fun to bounce at the computer though. :-)

We had our Christmas get together with Vicki and Dave on Saturday and that was very enjoyable. It's also the reason I kept the tree up for so long -- Christmas wasn't officially over until we'd got together with Vicki and Dave. :-)

My grandson could come into this world any day now. I'm really looking forward to getting to know him, even from a distance. Shame he won't be able to type at a keyboard for a few years yet though!!

I have been updating my desktop and have made it all 'pretty'. I have little pics from our webcams so I can now see Rod (who sits behind me) without turning around. I also had reserved space for photos of the baby, but since Chris sent me some scans from the ultra sound taken in August, I have this in that space for the time being. I'm told my grandson has a full head of hair and is 9lbs 15oz. How the HECK they know how much he weighs before he's born beats me. Modern technology... wow! There's no privacy even in the womb these days!

New Year, New Beginnings, New Experiments

I started writing this blog a few hours ago, before dinner, but then I stupidly clicked on a button in my browser and it all disappeared. SIGH. So I will start afresh.

I am SO glad I finally have a faster computer again. I'd fallen behind on things like reading Email, answering mail, reading the news/RSS feeds I subscribe too, and even reading stuff on websites (like my kids journals on DeviantArt and other blogs).... and because invoicing has been a long drawn out chore, I was behind on that too. Well in one day, Saturday, I managed to catch up with all of the above. Invoicing only took me half an hour to do instead of all day. Reading the mail, news and blogs took a couple of hours, and then Rod and I watched two (not one, but TWO) Christmas movies during the day. So I've been able to get back to little pet projects that I've been putting off because of always being constantly behind on other things. It's great!

We didn't really have plans for New Years Eve, so when a friend sent Rod a txt message inviting him to an impromptu party at his place, we decided to go along and be socialable. We got there around 11pm, and had a good time catching up with friends, and came home about 2:30am. The next day I was up early and thankfully, no hangover. That's probably because I didn't have as much to drink as what I would have a few years ago. And what I did have I quite enjoyed -- spiced rum with Pepsi Max (a sugar free Pepsi that has added seasoning to it).

I don't do resolutions. Every day I think to myself that it's a new day and it's my chance to "do things better" than the day before - and this philosophy works just as well for years as it does for days. It does feel like it's going to be a better year though. For one, I started 2007 without teeth. I had to go from Feb 2006 to Jan 28 2007 without dentures or teeth, so there's one improvement already. The hole in my side is healing - the hole itself is now getting quite a bit smaller and the RDNS nurse is only coming to change the dressing (which is also smaller) twice a week now. The last set of antibiotics seems to have worked... I'm no longer running odd fevers every day. I was able to send my kids real gifts that I had contact with and was able to see and touch and cuddle. In past years I've used eBay and had the items mailed directly to Michigan. This year, with a grandson on the way, I wanted to buy him a few things but really needed to be able to see the items in person, and in the case of a set of little jammies, I was able to 'pre-hug' and cuddle them before sending them off to Michigan. It was a good feeling. And in turn my kids were able to send a few things to me this year, and that was quite a treat for me as well. 2008 has a much better ring to it that 2007, and with my first grandchild only a few weeks away from being born, of course it'll be a year to remember!

I'm feeling a bit better. The heat the last week has been a challenge, but at least I'm not running those fevers I was last month. I still seem to have the sinus and bronchitis infections, but they do seem to be clearing up. My wound is also getting much smaller - the hole is anyway, and now the nurse is only coming twice a week instead of 3x a week. Sure will be glad when the hole closes - I'm really quite antsy to get in the ocean and play in the waves.

In the new experiments department, I'm now taking calcium supplements and fish oil. The calcium is because my GP suggested I probably wasn't getting enough in my diet, and gave me a chart of food and how much calcium you get from a serve of each. Yup, I'm probably not getting enough calcium - so supplements it is. The fish oil is based on a few different articles I've read here and there. It's main value is in helping the cardiovascular system work better, which of course if it helps blood flow, that in turn is going to help the hole in my side heal. As it helps with inflammation, it's not going to hurt my arthritis and may actually help with that. The other reasoning for trying it has to do with it being 'brain food'. I've always been a bit ADD (Attention Deficit), and one of the stories I read was that a study showed it helped ADD people stay focused. I can definitely use that! It also creates more of a compound in the brain that stops Alzheimer's plaques from developing. Last, because I had chemotherapy and hormone therapy, I have experienced what we real folks refer to as 'chemo brain'. The treatments basically made my body act as if it were 20 years older than I actually am, and I have some real problems in the memory and cognizant thought areas. I'm hoping it'll also help with this. No guarantees, but I do think it's worth a shot. I'm trying 1g three times a day. This really doesn't have much effect on diabetes, but it may have a huge benefit in improving my healing time, which is definitely diabetes related. My new grandson kept me up half the night the other night and he's not even born yet. Just before I was about to go to bed my son sent me an ICQ to let me know he and his wife were on the way to the hospital. So naturally I waited up to hear the news, but it was a false alarm - my guess is the baby has dropped, and that's why Jen is experiencing lower abdomen pain. If that's true, then it'll only be another week or so before the baby finally arrives and wreaks havoc on my son and dil's lives. As if he isn't causing enough of a stir now. (Ah, payback is so sweet!)

Last but not least, I've uploaded a whole bunch of pics to Flickr over the holidays (only 1 actual holiday snap though). Some are new, and others are from my website as I'm trying to migrate all of my on-line gallery over to Flickr. Here's our Christmas tree pic on Flickr:

Ho! Ho! Ho! MERRY Christmas

Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas!

Santa's been to my place and we must have been really good this year as he brought us some wonderful things!

From Christopher I have a BEAUTIFUL framed photo of the Saginaw Water Works building lit up for Christmas. Here's a link to I think the photo that was used for it - but this one has text on it saying what it is, when it was taken, and of course Chris' copyright on it: (LINK) It is absolutely stunning, and it's now hanging in my front hallway, along with the framed sketch Kerstin did of me last year when I visited. So now my entrance way is a gallery of my kids work. When my grandson gets here, his photo will be Terry's 'artistic' addition when I put a photo up of the baby. :-)

Kerstin made me a gorgeous make up bag that fits my diabetes glucose meter and supplies PERFECTLY. You can see it at: (LINK) - and it's waterproof, so my meter will stay safe if my antibacterial hand gel accidentally spills. Good thinking!

Terry and Jennifer sent a really pretty silver bracelet with a blue stone that was tucked inside the bag. I'm wearing it now!

From Terry, I have photos from his wedding and a CD with MORE photos that I can't wait to have a look at. :-)

Rod gave me a big box with a little stick of memory in it that says its a placeholder... because ... my prezzie from him (which I asked for) is a faster motherboard & CPU. The one we ordered only comes with 1 gig memory, so the stick I opened is a place holder for another 1 gig. I am going to really enjoy the new computer guts. It's a Gigabyte Intel 945 chipset Mother Board, plus an Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140(1.6Ghz X 2). Yes that's right, Drez, it's a DUAL CORE! Unfortunately it won't be here until Thursday, but meanwhile, we'll be enjoying Rod's gift that I've spent ages working on...

Santa brought Rod the full Married with Children complete box set including specials, which was cool, but I added to that a book that I compiled and edited: The Complete Guide to Married with Children. It includes cast bios, trivia, a list of DVD edits, and the episode guides that include notes, trivia, guest and recurring stars, plus listings of goofs. It literally is a book, and I might just make a PDF of it and add it to our online store. Oh, and thanks to all the work I put into it, I'm now a Married with Children expert! LOL.

I had two secret Santa's this year through Bookcrossing and both sent me the same book! One sent some butterfly stickers, Australian dried dragon fruit and some natural soap, and the other sent Bookcrossing post-it notes and bookmarks. I'm looking forward to reading the book, 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' as I read the authors first book, 'The Kite Runner' and really thought it was so well written. The other copy will naturally be bookcrossed - that's what bookcrossing is all about! :-)

We opened gifts in the office this year (since that's where the tree is) and I set the webcams to record movies. So once I edit them down, I'll put them online. I might wait until the new motherboard and CPU is here though - it'll make the job a LOT easier. :-) :-)

So our plans for the day now are to enjoy some prawns for lunch, do a few Instant scratchies, watch some Married with Children and then for tea tonight we have a lovely Turkey roll we're looking forward to.

Checking in

I've been 'unwell' for days now, and I'm so tired of it. Last Friday I saw my GP and he diagnosed bronchitis and changed my antibiotics from Keflex (which I still have about a months supply of) to Vibramycin (2 wks worth). He said to go back on the Keflex as soon as I finished the other antibiotics.

Thing is, the fevers I've been having (and accompanying high BGLs) are actually worse this week than they were last week. Amazingly, I can now seem to 'almost' function normally at 37 which I've never been able to in the past. But I've had 37.1 and 37.2 temps in the last few days too, and always seem to match with a high glucose reading. These are underarm temps, so I suppose a degree should be added. My baseline 'normal' underarm temp is 36.4. I ordered an ear thermometer one day this week. It'd be nice if it arrives tomorrow.

All my lovely low glucose readings and great averages have slipped away. I saw an add for a 'Glucoboy' which is a glucose meter for kids that will also play Nintendo Gameboy Advance games and has various incentives for regular checks and good readings. At the time I read the ad, I thought what a great idea. Now after days of high BGLs through no fault of anything I'm eating or doing, I'm not so sure withholding the ability to play certain levels is fair to kids who happen to be ill and have high readings. Otherwise, what an incredibly cool concept. Just my thoughts.

Was feeling OK enough on Sunday to take my walk. Monday I also went for my walk, but probably shouldn't have. On the bright side of that, I got my hair trimmed. Love those pensioner discounts. Last night was the computer club's annual Christmas dinner at the Flagstaff hotel. I was OK while there (napped in the afternoon beforehand), felt really rough in the car on way home. Had a fever spike.

We were out a little while tonight doing weekly shopping. We found a kettle that will boil water, and then keep at whatever temperature you set it for, so you can have perfect temp for being able to drink coffee or tea without waiting for it to cool down enough for it. We both are really happy with it.

Three Quarters of a Year

Today marks 9 months since I had surgery for an abscess in my back, and I'm still recovering from it, with a hole in my side that tracks 11cm deep. I still have regular dressing changes, and my back is a hodge podge of scars and odd swellings. I can't believe it's been this long and although the opening where packing is inserted and measurements are taken is smaller, it's still there, and not showing much sign of going away anytime soon. The depth of the track is actually DEEPER now than it was after the original surgery, but the last time I saw the 'specialist' they weren't too particularly concerned about it. My GP on the other hand, has been quite concerned and has contacted the clinic at the hospital that I have to deal with, but didn't really get too far either.

Here's the situation...

I had breast cancer in 2001 and had a mastectomy on the right side. In August 2005, I had reconstructive surgery, moving muscle and other tissue from my back to my right side to re-create my right breast. It's not the best reconstructed breast I've seen, but I'm happy to no longer have to wear a bra and prosthesis. The end of February this year, my BGLs got really strange and I felt very ill for a couple of weeks. I'd seen the doctor, was on antibiotics, but just couldn't shake whatever it was. And then I developed cellulitis (a skin tissue infection) that tracked in the area of one of the major scars on my back. The entire right side of my middle back was swollen, very red, and very hot. Blood tests were ordered that confirmed that I was 'septic' (the infection had reached my blood stream and was systemic). I was sent to the ER and consequently seen by the department that did the reconstruction - the plastics team. They determined I had an abscess and immediately scheduled me for emergency surgery. The goal was to allow it to heal from the inside out, and that is still the goal, but now a large section of it is a cavity on its own and separated from the area the top portion that is the deep 11cm track that is dressed on a regular basis. This area swells and becomes quite 'full' and painful feeling. We think part of the swelling, fullness and pain is due to lymphedema -- my lymph nodes were removed from under my arm when I had the mastectomy so this system that removes lymph fluid from my right side doesn't work as well as a normal persons. As a visual description, imagine a regular ruler sitting above a dinner plate. The ruler is the 'hole' or track that goes from my side to my spine and is 11cm deep. The dinner plate is the area underneath that is a hole inside - a cavity that is just there, going nowhere, and certainly not going away.

Due to the swelling and the fact the other track actually became deeper than it had originally, my GP ordered an ultrasound, which showed that this cavity was 'detached' from the other track and inflammed. So my GP sent a fax off to the plastics treatment team at the hospital requesting that I be seen sooner than my scheduled appointment, which at that time was about 4 weeks away. In the interim, I had my regular yearly mammogram and appointment with the breast cancer center. I showed my breast surgeon my back and his first reaction was 'what the heck is THAT?' (it's not pretty). When I explained what it was from, he suggested I get in to see the plastics treatment team earlier than my scheduled appointment (now about 3 weeks away). So this was three professionals - my GP, my breast surgeon, and my visiting nurse - who all felt that I needed this area checked out. When I finally heard from the plastics treatment people, my new appointment was a whole week earlier than my scheduled one. The appointment turned out to be rather surreal. The doctor more or less sentenced me to life with this cavity with shrug of her shoulders. As to expectations, she said they have none as they already gave up all their guesses on how long this would take to heal. She thinks the main track will probably eventually heal and I'll just have the cavity left permanently and it will be susceptible to infection. And then she shrugged. She didn't even seem too concerned that the depth of the track is now deeper than it was start with. One of her comments was that that they couldn't do any further surgery on it because obviously I don't heal so further surgery isn't an option - basically there's nothing more that they can do for me.

That was in October. Here we are in December and I'm not even sure when my next appointment will be (it was to be 4 months and they will send me a card. In the mean time, my GP is trying to find out who can see me for another opinion. As I'm a 'public' patient in Australia, this gets a bit tricky. If I were a 'private' patient and had my own insurance, I would have lots of choices. As a public patient, I don't seem to have any choices really. My GP can't refer me to another hospital treatment centre as he would get in trouble for not following protocol. He has spoken to the head nurse of the plastics department and they didn't have any alternative suggestions and were less than helpful. His next step is to talk to my breast surgeon, and I haven't heard the results of that conversation, but based on his observations and suggestions in late September, I think he has the same problem as he would have to deal with the consequences of the politics of seeing me for this problem rather than letting the plastics department handle it. Personally, I've come to think that we need for me NOT to be seeing surgeons for advice if surgery isn't going to be an option.

For the last couple of weeks, I've been having some really good and really bad days. The good days I'm able to nearly have a normal life, do extra walking, take care of my house, keep up with stuff on the computer. On the bad days, it starts with a fever in the morning and high BGLs both of which are intermittent for the rest of the day, despite following the same routines and meals as I usually have for breakfast and lunch... so I know it's not what I'm eating that's causing the higher BGLs. I also feel tired and can't keep up with stuff, needing to nap in the afternoon and sometimes falling asleep watching TV or at the computer in the evening. As I'm already on antibiotics, I talked to my GP about the fever when it first started and he felt it might be a virus, and I should wait a few days and watch for any new symptoms, but if I start getting worse to come in and see him. Well I haven't really gotten better or worse. At any rate, I probably do need to get back and see him -- and find out if anything is to become of his talk with the breast surgeon.

So this blog entry marks approximately 270 days of this. Most of the time I cope quite well and have a good sense of humour, but there are times when I wonder what next? Especially on the days I'm running a fever and my BGLs are higher than normal... it just seems like there's something else waiting around the corner to ambush me, and it worries me. Yet I don't want to be the type who's continually looking behind me in fear either. ((sigh))
